چکیده
In this paper, we examine the implications of managing for sustained yield in a world characterized by growing risk and uncertainty. We review history (SY) forestry North America, with an emphasis on economic benefits persistence SY paradigm today, despite publicized shift towards wider range forest values called sustainable management (SFM). show that current goals around sustainability as well SFM indicators are still predicated maximizing harvest levels timber flows. build simple model to explore under extreme (fat-tailed) assumptions level without adequately accounting leads depletion stock corresponding decline economy. discuss these results relation real-world events such increase catastrophic fires pest outbreaks like mountain pine beetle Western Canada. then theoretical practical flow from analysis.

Future collapse: how optimistic should we be?
Prof. Kelly FRS is optimistic about the chances of avoiding a collapse, but sadly we find his arguments entirely unpersuasive. For example, have Malthus (or we) really been wrong about food security? Roughly 850 million people are seriously undernourished (lacking sufficient calories) today, and perhaps 2 billion are mal-nourished (lacking one or more essential nutrients) [1]. When Malthus live...
متن کاملHow Should Global Fund Use Value-for-Money Information to Sustain its Investments in Graduating Countries?
It has been debated whether the Global Fund (GF), which is supporting the implementation of programs on the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, should consider the value-for-money (VFM) for programs/interventions that they are supporting. In this paper, we critically analyze the uses of economic information for GF programs, not only to ensure accountability to the...
متن کاملHow should we intervene in psychosis risk syndromes?
SUMMARY Research diagnostic instruments such as the Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes (SIPS) are now able to reliably identify individuals with different types of psychosis risk syndromes (PRS). About one-third of individuals with PRS convert to a diagnosable psychotic disorder within three years of the initial assessment. Currently available randomized controlled trials of intervent...
متن کاملHow Should We Teach Simulation ?
This paper deals with the issue of how one can teach simulation in the most time-efficient way. We first distinguish between different types of student as regards their background and future needs. We next look at reasons for studying simulation at a business school. Next we compare animation oriented simulators with simulation languages. We then study a list of desirable criteria for simulatio...
